Congratulations to Clancy!

Clancy is the winner of our Valentine’s photo contest. His picture and story will appear in the next edition of The New Barker Magazine.

Clancy is currently in foster care with Pit Stop Bullies. Here is his story, from his foster mom, Ashlie:

Clancy (2 years old) has had a rough life this far. He was dropped off at Animal Control as a pup, then pulled by a “rescue”. This “rescue” pulled lots of dogs like Clancy. They had a Pet Store on the side where they’d sell the dogs they took from Death Row. If these dogs didn’t sell for profit, they’d end up at “The Farm” where they were to live 30-40 to a pen and given only 2 cups of food a day between them to fight over. Once busted, Clancy and the others were sent back to Animal Control to live for another 4 months before we took him. He is one of the most loving dogs I have ever met and I vow to find him his Perfect Home.

$5 neuter surgeries for male cats Feb. 21 & 22

In conjunction with SpayDay USA, we’re hosting Tampa’s first neuter-a-thon at the clinic on February 21 and 22, 2009. Cost is $5 per cat; limited to male cats only. Price includes surgery, pain injection and a rabies shot. Advanced registration is required by calling 1-888-SPAY-FLA (888-772-9352). Our goal is to see 500 fewer cats adding to the overpopulation problem in Tampa Bay. In our climate, females can go into heat constantly, and males are always ready to accommodate!

Grand Prize: The cat with the largest “family jewels” will receive a 12 month supply of cat food, a scratching post and lots of catnip toys! The owner will receive a bottle of fine wine and a box of gourmet chocolates.

The event is made possible in part by a grant from the Doris Day Foundation and Humane Society of the United States.

Why spay/neuter? Spaying or neutering is one of the best things you can do for your pet. It eliminates or reduces the risk of several kinds of cancer and makes your pet an overall healthier companion. It reduces aggression and solves other behavior issues such as spraying and marking in male cats. Spaying or neutering does not make your pet fat, lazy, miserable or lethargic. It also helps eliminate the ultimate tragedy – the number of unwanted pets being born in our community. Last year, almost 30,000 animals were euthanized in Hillsborough County due to overpopulation. Two cats and their offspring could easily turn into a colony of 16 within a year. Be a part of the solution – spay/neuter your pet!

Valentine’s Pet Photos a Success!

We hosted our first Valentine’s Pet Photos today at The Dog’s Meow, a new dog and cat specialty store in Lutz. We had fun meeting lots of great puppies, dogs, and of course their owners too! The event was in honor of the 1st annual Florida Week for the Animals.

Special thanks to Lisa and Art from Little Pet Project for putting in lots of hours prepping and taking the photos. Lisa is an awesome photographer, and everyone was very happy with the pictures. We even fit seven dogs and two people into one of the shots!

Sarah from The Dog’s Meow was very gracious in letting us use her store for the event. The boutique has lots of interesting pet items, including clothes, toys, food and homemade treats.

We couldn’t have done the event without the wonderful volunteers from Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity at USF.

The New Barker Magazine donated 50% of the proceeds from today’s subscription sales to ACT. They will also feature one lucky dog from today’s pictures in the next edition.

We look forward to holding another photo shoot in the future. If you want to be sure you know about our upcoming events, be sure to join our email list.
