$5 neuter surgeries for male cats Feb. 21 & 22
In conjunction with SpayDay USA, we’re hosting Tampa’s first neuter-a-thon at the clinic on February 21 and 22, 2009. Cost is $5 per cat; limited to male cats only. Price includes surgery, pain injection and a rabies shot. Advanced registration is required by calling 1-888-SPAY-FLA (888-772-9352). Our goal is to see 500 fewer cats adding to the overpopulation problem in Tampa Bay. In our climate, females can go into heat constantly, and males are always ready to accommodate!
Grand Prize: The cat with the largest “family jewels” will receive a 12 month supply of cat food, a scratching post and lots of catnip toys! The owner will receive a bottle of fine wine and a box of gourmet chocolates.
The event is made possible in part by a grant from the Doris Day Foundation and Humane Society of the United States.
Why spay/neuter? Spaying or neutering is one of the best things you can do for your pet. It eliminates or reduces the risk of several kinds of cancer and makes your pet an overall healthier companion. It reduces aggression and solves other behavior issues such as spraying and marking in male cats. Spaying or neutering does not make your pet fat, lazy, miserable or lethargic. It also helps eliminate the ultimate tragedy – the number of unwanted pets being born in our community. Last year, almost 30,000 animals were euthanized in Hillsborough County due to overpopulation. Two cats and their offspring could easily turn into a colony of 16 within a year. Be a part of the solution – spay/neuter your pet!

Pet Wash to Benefit Angel
Angel, an 18 month old pit bull, staggered up to a house on November 6 begging for help. She was thought to have been dumped from a car or truck, left to fend for herself. Nothing but skin and bones, she was cold to the touch with white gums, but still wagging her tail as if to express her will to live. After a vet’s evaluation and treatment she is expected to fully recover, but her surgery and treatment will cost at least $1,000. ACT is hosting a fundraiser on November 23 to help out.

Take a Step. Save a Life. Stride for Strays!
Our 8th annual Stride for Strays walkathon is coming up on October 11! Walk your tail off for homeless pets and enjoy food, fun, prizes, activities, demonstrations and a fun day in the park with your dog.
The Stride will take place October 11, from 9 am – 1 pm at Lowry Park in Tampa (across from Lowry Park Zoo). Funds raised help us keep our prices down so our clients can afford to get their pets fixed.
In 2007, more than 26,000 companion animals were destroyed in Hillsborough County. In Pinellas during the same period, almost 15,000 animals met the same cruel fate.
That’s over 40,000 animals in one year, in just two counties.
One proven way to reduce this tragedy is to keep them from going into our local shelters to begin with by providing low cost spay and neuter services to people who cannot otherwise afford it. San Francisco has done it. So has New Hampshire. In fact, every community with high-volume, low cost spay/neuter has significantly dropped its euthanasia rate.
ACT is doing just that in the Tampa Bay area. In the first two years of operation, the ACT Clinic has sterilized over 10,000 pets. Its goal is to sterilize 10,000 more within the next year. Since a lot of people cannot afford even ACT’s low fees, many of our operations are subsidized by caring individuals and corporations. More generous sponsors are needed. The more donations we have, the more lives we can save.
Stride for Strays is ACT’s major fundraiser. In 2007, the $40,000 we raised was due mostly to the generosity of our individual walkers and teams. Our goal is to raise $60,000 in 2008.
